You know when you are ready to pay your purchase, you reach your hand in your pocket book and realized you forgot your purse? Well, I was that person the other day at the post office. The clerk already printed the postage and pressed it to a bubble yellow 11"x 8" envelope. In the envelope were two books I was mailing to Kakngah in Malaysia. The first was bead embroidery book and the second book was for my grandnephew, D'Haikal.
"$19.83", said Eileen the clerk. I reached my hand into my backpack and the section where I stored the purse was bare. I tried another sections eventhough I knew the purse was at home in my other backpack. Embarassed beyond words, I told the clerk that I didn't my purse with me. She couldn't cancel the transaction because the postage was already printed.
"Can you hold it for me? I will be back within one hour."
"Hmmmm...hold on a second." She went to the back and returned to a caunter a few minutes later with another clerk. But the second clerk walked out of the caunter and walked toward me. She didn't say a word, but smiled and handed to me a $20.00 bill. I looked at Eileen and she said, "I paid with my money first and you can come back anytime to pay me back."
I took the money from the second clerk and thanked her and handed the $20.00 bill to Eileen. What else can you say to a stranger who trust you except genuinely thank you, thank you and thank you? It took me 20 minutes to ride my bicycle.
When I got back to my apartment, the first thing I went to look was the shoe box where I keep almost a dozen Thank You cards that I've kept all these times. I found one that I really liked. It was a simple two-fold card with two words: Thank You on the front page. I thanked Eileen expressed my appreciation to her kindness. I rode back to the post office with a $20.00 bill neatly tucked in the card. When I walked back the second time into the South Station, Eilen was assisting a customer. I walked up to her, handed her the card and thanked her again.
Thank you Eileen.
And Allah loves us all.

And Allah loves you. And make sure her Boss knows that, too.
