I wrote here a few times how much I enjoy running, and many times I whine about not enough time to run because of bla, this, bla, bla that. Until today, I never entered any races before. There are hundreds of races all year around in Massachusetts, but don't ask me why I hadn't entered in any of those.
Last May or perhaps June, my good friend, Jane convinced me to register to 10KTuft Health Plan for Women Race. It would be fun, she said. Why not. I registered on line. Mailed the check and forgot all about it. Last week when after Jane returned home from her trip to Iceland she called me and reminded me that we needed to pick up the bib number, official t-shirt and chrono track timing tag.
Yesterday we metat Bombay Cafe' for lunch. The food was delicious. After the lunch we walked up to Nike Town on Newbury Street to drop our old running shoes. Actually I wanted to drop three pairs, but some women are attached to their beautiful shoes, handbags and clothes, whereas I am attached to my books and running shoes. So, two pairs will do for now.
After the Nike Town we walked to City Sports on Boylston Street to pick up the tag and the bib number.
Jane and I met at Park Street Subway station at 11:30 a.m. Lovely afternoon, breezy and plenty of sun shines. The race started exactly at 12:00 noon. The first mile Jane and I ran side by side. Into a second mile I picked up my pace. When I passed 5 mile mark, I knew I couldn't make it under one hour. I hadn't run seriously for a while, but as I was approaching the finish line, I saw the official time on top finish line banner: I hour 7 minutes. The digit blinked, blinked, blinked.......
It was a exhilarating feeling. I heard someone's voice in a crowd near the finish line said, "Red shoes, you're slowing down, come on, you can do it." It didn't matter if it was meant for somebody else. My official time is 67.37 minutes or 10.87 minutes/mile pace. Yikes, but I'm so proud of myself.
