The sun was halfway to the top when I passed this beautiful sunflower garden in South End. The bigger sunflowers grow on the rows way back from the side walk. Burgundy color sunflowers scattered among the yellow. Bees , the pollinators buzz in the air stopping and hopping from one flower to another doing their chores. Bees are like some of us too, got to work on the weekends.
The bees collect pollen from male sunflowers and move to female sunflowers. But how do I identify between male and female sunflower? Did I learn it at school? Darn....it has been a long time.
I've been looking for big sunflower as big as dinner plate. During my family trip to Medan in 1993, I came across the biggest sunflower I had ever seen . After we checked in at Hotel Parapat, Mak, Kak N, my youngest brother, Adik, my niece MN and I went out for a walk . We came across a small patch of garden in front of leather souvenir stall.
One particular flower had 12 inches diameter, and the tree stood over six feet. We were like any tourists too, wanted to froze a special moment, Adik and I stood on both side of this giant sunflower . The moment KN released the shutter, Adik grabbed the flower stem and bent it in front of my face. When I developed the film, all we could see was the giant sunflower completely covered my face. We had a good laugh every time we looked at the picture. I hope Adik still keeps the darn picture.
